The Design Centre, Berkhamsted Collegiate School, UK
Berkhamsted Collegiate School has occupied this site in the centre of the town since the sixteenth century, and has built a fine group of buildings planned around quadrangles, over the succeeding centuries.
This project is conceived to integrate Art, Design and Technology departments in a single building and to create a new kitchen and dining facility for the Castle Campus.
The site is prominent, with two major street frontages, the River Bulbourne to the south, and is in the town centre Conservation Area. The design can be read as a group of buildings, allowing some differentiation between the teaching areas and the catering space, and responding to the variations in scale of the neighbouring buildings and spaces and to the alignment of the historic streets.
