An approach was required which would engage with industry-familiar structural materials and systems to deliver a low cost building to a tight programme, comprising a steel frame; holorib concrete unscreeded first floor; profiled metal roof decks and cold-rolled Structural Framing System walls built in-situ. Within this envelope, the elements of the design needed to achieve a low-energy, naturally ventilated building did not have a cost premium over the equivalent mechanical strategies. In fact the result is a remarkably inexpensive and highly replicable building with a full natural environmental control system.
