Chancellors Conference and Teaching Centre, Manchester
The Conference Hall and its neighbouring meeting rooms are all naturally ventilated, and naturally lit. The Hall itself adopts the form of the original Pantheon in Rome with a central circular oculus. It is extraordinarily effective. Airflow in the Hall was analysed during the design by computational fluid dynamics which gave a fine grained prediction of air movement under peak heat loads.
The project comprises seven or eight different elements, each intricately designed. We were very interested to explore the prospects for a delicate symbiosis between the conserved landscape and the naturally conditioned buildings within it, old and new.
